img_00351

Apple and Verizon talks for 2010 iPhone

PiratX | April 29, 2009

verizon-iphonejpg

Pointing only to anonymous people familiar with the negotiations as its sources, USA Today explains that Verizon reportedly entered serious talks before Steve Jobs’ hiatus and has been continuing those talks even with Jobs temporarily sidelined for medical reasons.

Other than a 2010 target release window, little else is divulged by the apparent insiders.

Although not explicitly stated, the newspaper infers that the phone would be a CDMA device compatible with Verizon’s existing network and therefore using EVDO for its 3G Internet access. Such a move would give the phone broad coverage but directly contradicts Apple COO Tim Cook’s own dismissal of CDMA last week: when discussing iPhone expansion plans, the executive justified the absence of a CDMA model by arguing that a single, GSM phone model is easier to produce than building a separate version for a relatively small batch of customers. Cook also sharply criticized CDMA by asserting that it has no future, as most CDMA carriers plan to phase out the calling technology in favor of the same 4G standard that will be used on GSM networks.

More likely is a direct leap to a 4G. Verizon chief executive Ivan Seidenberg recently explained that a deal is more likely for a phone with the advanced networking technology as it would let Apple continue making one phone but still service North American carriers that are for now off limits. Verizon plans to officially launch its commercial 4G network in early 2010 and would therefore have at least some of its network ready for an iPhone by the time AT&T’s exclusivity term ends, which is likely for the same year.

However determined Verizon may be to land an iPhone of its own, AT&T may topple those ambitions through its own discussions. Separate rumors have the incumbent iPhone carrier pushing Apple to extend its US exclusivity until 2011 — enough to stall any Verizon deal until AT&T’s own 4G network is ready.

Any successful deal, no matter the network type, would likely be a serious blow to AT&T, which credited much of its ability to weather the ongoing economic crisis to iPhone sales and the resulting spike in data revenue. Aside from reducing incentives to launch massive, special upgrades to the network, a Verizon model would let those dissatisfied with AT&T’ s 3G coverage or its customer service defect to Verizon without giving up Apple’s handset.

Apple rumored in talks for Verizon cheaper iPhone & media tablet

PiratX | April 29, 2009

mac_touchjpg

Already rumored chatting with Apple over an iPhone for 2010, Verizon is now claimed by BusinessWeek to have been in discussions for at least six months to bring the two mystery devices to its network, one of which could be ready as early as the summer while both are reportedly in the prototype stage.

The first is simply characterized as an “iPhone lite” and would be a physically smaller, thinner and feature-reduced version of Apple’s distinctive handset. It would achieve the effect by using a system-on-a-chip — a processor that combines its necessary graphics core, controllers and other components on a single chip package — and would let Apple “blow away” the profit margins on the existing iPhone as well as the Verizon-exclusive BlackBerry Storm, according to one of the magazine’s sources.

The second device is potentially more revolutionary and appears to be the tablet-like device first leaked by AppleInsider a year and a half ago. It’s envisioned as a “media pad” with HD video, music and photos, but it would also allow calls over Wi-Fi. Purportedly, it’s smaller than the Amazon Kindle in overall size but has a larger touchscreen, suggesting the absence of a physical keyboard. One of the tipsters also believes it may use the same system-on-a-chip technology as the mini iPhone to keep costs down.

A description such as this matches more than one report of Apple ordering batches of 10-inch touchscreens from Taiwan. Whatever its actual features, the purported eyewitness of a prototype tablet is excited about it and envisions Verizon dominating a relatively undeveloped segment overnight.

“The media pad category might go to Verizon,” the viewer says. “We are talking about a device where people will say, ‘Damn, why didn’t we do this?’ Apple is probably going to define the damn category.”

While the accuracy of the product descriptions isn’t known, Verizon’s wireless chief Lowell McAdam has recently confirmed that he has spoken with Apple’s Steve Jobs. The iPhone maker’s co-founder is rumored to have been directly involved with the negotiations and, supposedly, would have already talked with McAdam about at least the economy “iPhone-like” device.

Either potentially flies in the face of Apple’s own public statements on its support for Verizon’s network, which until its move to 4G won’t be interoperable with AT&T’s. On the subject of a CDMA iPhone, Apple COO and acting CEO Tim Cook swatted aside the possibility by claiming there’s no long-term life in the format and that it made the prospect of selling one device worldwide difficult. The executive also praised the existing relationship with AT&T.

Still, it’s difficult at this stage to determine how much of even Apple’s public statements are accurate. The company has been known in the past to use dismissive talk as a feint until a product is ready, such as for the first video-capable iPod and the original iPhone. The magazine also speculates that Apple may use talks with Verizon as a bargaining chip to squeeze more concessions out of AT&T, which itself has been pushing for iPhone exclusivity through 2011.

Appropriately, the report has any possible Apple-Verizon deal relatively distant and maintains that the discussions only got hot in the recent past — complicating any predictions about a likely release date.

Microsoft looking to launch iPhone competitor on Verizon’s network

PiratX | April 29, 2009

iphone_diamond2pink_ufcjpg

Microsoft Corp. plans to take aim at Apple’s iPhone with its own version of a touch-screen handset that could launch on Verizon’s network sometime early in 2010, according to a report published just minutes ago by the Wall Street Journal.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the financial publication said the two companies are currently discussing possible terms of the deal. It adds that Microsoft has been working on its own touch-screen smartphone hardware under the code-name “Pink.”

The project would reportedly leverage and then extend upon Microsoft’s existing Windows Mobile operating system, adding new capabilities that would undoubtedly mirror many of Apple’s advances in the mobile space, including the Windows Marketplace for Mobile — a clone of Apple’s App Store.

“While Microsoft is involved in the design of the phone’s software and hardware, a third-party is expected to make the device, just as Google Inc. has worked closely with partners to make handsets based on its Android operating system,” the report says. No further details were reported.

Google Voice Released!

PiratX | April 29, 2009

gvmobile1jpg

Google Voice, the very cool invite-only calling wrapper that used to be called Grand Central, can now be controlled directly from the iPhone with the GV Mobile app. It’s pretty fantastic.

The app costs $3 and is just designed to interface with Google Voice. You can dial directly out from your GV number (either using the dialpad or through your normal iPhone contacts list), send texts from your GV number, and access your GV number’s voicemail.

Text and calls go through properly and voicemail is as close an approximation of your iPhone’s visual voicemail as it gets. Fairly accurate transcripts of your voicemails can be sent via text to your phone as well. History is funky, however, since it shows “Unknown” for all my calls. You can control which phone numbers incoming calls dial, and also which phone you want to “call out” from.
