Apple Now Charging to Re-Download Apps via iPhone?

PiratX | May 31, 2009

img_0105-266x400

Looks like Apple’s begun charging full price if you try to download an app you’ve already bought over the iPhone. This did not used to be the case — previously you’d be given a dialog stating you’d already bought it and you could go ahead and re-download it for free. Now the dialog says you can still re-download it for free on your computer (via iTunes), but if you want to download it again directly to your iPhone, you’ve got to buy it again.

What’s going on here? Not bandwidth control, since free apps and updates to paid apps are still free. Not device restriction, because you can still re-download for free via iTunes (though it’s not as convenient, of course).

We’re guessing that with the on-device account management coming to iPhone 3.0 — where you can log in and out of multiple iTunes accounts right on your iPhone — Apple is putting this in place to prevent the sharing of purchases between accounts. (Otherwise you could just log into 100 other iPhones with your account and give them all your paid apps right over the air).

We can understand the concern, but we’ll miss the functionality. Personally, I bought a FedEx tracking app that I delete when I’m not expecting anything and re-download when I am. Now I can’t do that any time I want any more — only any time I’m at my computer.

What do you think, is multiple on-device accounts worth the loss of free on-device paid app re-downloads?

Leaked Photos of the Next iPhone in Action?

PiratX | May 31, 2009

Photos of a next generation iPhone prototype have surfaced online at Chinese language blog UMPCFever.

The external design is not featured however the report indicts that the new device does have an autofocus camera. It uses an onscreen square that can be moved around the screen by tapping. This selects which object or person will be focused on.

Also pictured is the rumored digital compass and its software, MMS, and Copy and Paste with images.

These photos haven’t been confirmed as genuine; however, the interface does look in keeping with Apple design and rumored expectations.

Flash for iPhone?

PiratX | May 30, 2009

img_012610

Today they released a new update for iMobileCinema, the plugin for Safari that allows you to view some Flash videos directly from the internet. Here is what has change:

They have optimized the video decoder

They improved the hardware acceleration on the audio decoder

Eliminated operations on flash memory structure

Fix several bugs

The developers are also aware that other sites have changed the encoding of video in short there will be a new update that re-add support to many sites which now no longer work. Simultaneously updating iMobileCinema will also update the Toggle to SBSettings which probably suited to support the new version of the application

Doom classic for iPhone coming soon

PiratX | May 30, 2009

John Carmack, Technical Director of Id Software, has posted on the progress of Doom for the iPhone.

The iPhone interface around the game is all done nicely. Wolf Classic got dinged a bit for the blocky look of the buttons and interface components. I didn’t actually see any complaints about the crappy monospace font, but it deserved some. Everything looks good now.

The initial release will be for OS 2.x, and support multiplayer over WiFi. A later release will be for 3.x only, and support bluetooth multiplayer. I looked into the possibility of 3G multiplayer, but the latencies just aren’t good enough — I see 380 or so pings from my phone to local servers. This was interesting, because I have talked to other hardware vendors that claim 3G latencies of half that. I’m not sure if there are issues with the iPhone, issues with AT&T’s network in Dallas, or if the vendor was just mistaken about what they were getting. One anecdotal report is that iPhones work better in Japan than here, so it may be infrastructure.

Carmack’s post goes into much more detail about sound quality, textures, and gameplay. You can read the entire post using the link below…

Comparison iPhone Matte vs. Glossy

PiratX | May 30, 2009

Is This the Next-Gen iPod Nano With Built-In Camera?

PiratX | May 26, 2009

newnanojpg

We’d been hearing things about digital cameras in the next-gen iPods, but we thought it’d be in the touch. iLounge has mocked up the next-gen iPod nano using details from a source they say “has a perfect track record for accuracy.” It’s got a camera in its butt.

According to their mockup, it’s almost exactly like the current nano, but the screen aspect ratio is wider (1.5:1) and the click wheel+button has been squeezed down. They’ve got no other details, like megapixels or storage capacity or if it’ll shoot video (which would be amazing as a casual camera if you think about it), but we can assume if it’s real, we’ll see it in September, like always.

It would also solidify Apple’s push into imaging, since it would conceivably mean that every iPod is getting a camera (well, maybe not the classic, if it survives the year). Kind of exciting from the angle of putting a camera in every single pocket, even if thinking about the lens in that thing makes our eyeballs ache. But maybe nanolomography wouldn’t be so bad.
